Our nation's colleges and universities have always been hotbeds of innovation, environmental awareness and forward thinking, so it should come as no surprise that major universities around the country vanpool with us. From the University of Michigan to the University of California, San Diego and many prestigious campuses in between, we are picking up friends at universities. Vanpooling has become an integral component of many universities employee parking and transportation services programs. The transportation sector continues to be responsible for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions and typically comprises a substantial component of total campus emissions.
As Michael Davis, Transportation Coordinator for the University of California, Irvine's Parking & Transportation Services Department observed, "Vanpooling is one of the crucial tools the university employs to address the sustainable transportation requirements of our growing campus. Especially for employees not well served by traditional fixed route transit, vanpooling, in many cases, makes it possible for them to enjoy a cost effective, sustainable transportation option. Especially when gas prices were over $4/ gallon, for some of my colleagues who might otherwise have been unable to afford to commute to UC - Irvine, vanpooling has literally been the conduit to employment at UC – Irvine."
